I FORGET TO TELL YOU ABOUT WASHING MY CLOTHES!!!!

I can't believe I haven't told you about this. I have a new project. I go over to the orphanage every week and I am learning how to properly wash my clothes by hand. Many of you may think that is an easy thing, but I can tell you it is not. The first day I did it my hands were open bleeding sores that stung like you can't imagine and that was only after washing 6 pairs of underwear(kilot) and one shirt(mayo). This week however(my hands have healed) I did it again and I managed to wash 9 pairs of underwear and one bra. So I am definitely making progress. My hands are a little sore now, but nothing like last week. Basically here in Haiti your hands are the actual washboard. Not very comfortable! :) The young girls you see in this picture could not believe that I had never washed my clothes by hand. They thought it was so funny. They would laugh and giggle at me and ooh and ahh at my bleeding hands. I think they all admire my perseverance. I haven't given up even though every other white person is telling me that I'm ridiculous for trying and that I should just hire a maid if I ever needed to do it. I am determined that I will get it and that I will become comfortable with it.
Gotta go! Please pray for Ike that is going to hit us tomorrow morning. I will keep you posted.
Love maggie

Dear Maggie,

It looks like you were spared a direct hit from Ike. I am hoping you are okay. They have started evacuating the Keys.

Hanna dumped up to 6.5" of rain in some areas. S NH, W MA and coastal CT were the hardest hit. Its going to be sunny and warm today. I am going to get outside and enjoy it. It will be snowing soon!

Herbie and Phoebe want to know if you still need blankets. If you do, can they send them to you?

Love, Ca

Dearest Maggie ~ Here I sit so wonderfully comfortable and sharing the warmth and sunny skies of southern California with my Mom...oblivious to the outside world (for the most part since I've been here almost a month now!)and finally caught up with the news of storms hitting Haiti once again and, of course, my thoughts were of you...wondering about your safety and well-being...so I shot a quick email to Rick asking for news and he gave me your "blog"...I
have it at home but not here. Any-
way, know that you are in my prayers...I return to NH very late Tuesday night (or early Wed. morning) and will be leaving for the women's retreat Fri. evening with Alyson & others. Pray for spiritual growth and enlightenment when you think of us. Let me know if there is anything you NEED --whether for yourself or for the class you teach (what ages?). Sorry to read about the breaking of your relationship--not an easy decision to come to I'm sure, and I'm glad that you sound at peace in having come to that place. I love you Maggie -- know that you can drop anything on my doorstep!
Peace and love to you ~ Chris
P. S. Did I ever tell you how blessed I was this year to have had YOU for my secret sister? Again, thanks for being there for me! :)

Hey, Maggie, just checking in.
Not much new here in Keene, except that this weekend hasn't been too bad, thanks to the tail end of Hanna that's giving us a few inches of rain. I'm working nights and I've gotten out almost on time both of the past two mornings.

You, of course, are now being overrun by Ike. I'm sure it's pretty brutal. Maybe there won't be any more major storms for you after this one, although frankly, I doubt it. Just remember that George Bush and the others like him who did absolutely nothing about global warming for the past eight years are to blame.

Best of luck with all your endeavors. Send me an email sometime if you want to: franzreichsman@comcast.net. In the meantime I'll keep checking the blog.

Your friend,
Franz
